WEB based solution to quick photo editing – Picnik

Just found out about this online photo editing website while going through the Flickr.

http://www.picnik.com/

Turned out that Picnik has been available to users since early 2007 in beta version. So maybe its not news to some of you out there afterall.

Anyway, it turned out that this free to use, web based photo editing site called “Picnik” is quite user friendly to those who just wants to do some simple adjustments to the photos.

One good thing is that there is no need to download any software and the entire operation is done solely though the Website. In other words, you can now do simple editing to the photos from anywhere, as long as there is internet availability.

Picnik has done link ups with various social networking and photo hosting sites such as Facebook, Flickr, photobucket, Picasa etc. So you can actually make these photo adjustments and then upload the pictures onto these sites. The upload picture formats are the major common types available in the market such as jpeg, png, Tiff etc. And pictures, once editing is completed, can be saved in jpg (Jpeg) format.

So once the photos have been uploaded, you can begin to fiddle with the various tabs to start your online editing adventure.

The first obvious button to start is the “Auto fix” button, but if you like to take a little more control to the editing process, you can opt for the individual buttons to test out the effects on the image. Once you have decided you like the effects attained, you can simply just click ok to proceed with the change.

The part which I thought was really fun was the “Create” tab where I had endless fun trying out the various panels of “effects” listed at the left hand panel. Each of these prefixed effects can be added onto the photo and can instantly transform the image. You may also add stickers, text etc onto your digital photo. There are some features listed in the different tabs and panels known as “Premium”. These are meant for paying customers who wants to use the more interesting features on their photos.

You are free to try these buttons even if you are a non paying customer. But the catch is, you will not able save them. Still, its nice to try out these effects and who knows, you might just decide to pay them for the yearly subscription to enjoy these features whole year round!

Anyway, I had my fun playing with the free ready made features and these are what I done. Overall experience with the website is not too bad. In truth, it was quite a fun session.

I was able to test out the different combination of the effects without too much waiting time for each operation.

Of course, to be realistic, this site is only meant for those looking for a quick solution to digital photos. For those with desire to work more sophisticatedly in photo editing, it will not be possible. There are no layers, mask or channels and it is totally impossible to cut one part of the photo with hope that it can be merged onto another one.

For such functions, it will still be back to the good old paid versions of more sophisticated form of photo editing software. Or even freewares like Gimp. Ultimately, it’s a personnel choice of how much time you wish to invest to create the eventual master piece.

Hope you will have fun in this as much as I did using Pinik.
